HUMANE OFFICER
TYPICAL DUTIES: Under direct supervision, provides the enforcement of City Ordinances relating to dog leash laws. Must be available to work any holiday and/or weekends as requested. Responds to dispatchers and animal control office to pick up deceased animals and pending calls; records calls given and turns in field reports at end of workday; picks up dogs running at large, impounds after notifying owner, if possible; issues warning tickets on first offense violations of City Ordinances; issues citations on City Ordinance violations when warranted; picks up dogs involved in dog bite cases and impounds for mandatory 10 days; feeds dogs at pound during weekends and holidays and checks supply of food; keeps dog kennels clean during weekend and holidays; keeps up preventative maintenance on motor vehicles and equipment used by Humane Division; takes dogs in pound to veterinarian for vaccinations when necessary; disposes of dogs in a humane manner; sets up traps at the request of citizens with proper documentation; fills out daily reports on activities of the day; testifies in court on any citation issued; checks dog pound daily for vandalism to the pound and theft of animals at the pound. Makes necessary repairs to dog pound; sees that dog pound has protective material installed to protect animals from bad weather; takes periodical inventory of equipment issued and used by Humane Officers; checks out dogs at random when they are in violation of animal control ordinance; contacts dog owners if any violations are present and issues warnings or citations; keeps record of where dog traps are sent; reports the need for dog traps or poles to immediate supervisor and reports to them on a daily basis. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to deal with the public and fellow employees in a tactful, considerate manner; concerned and interested in providing humane treatment of animals. Ability to lift 50 lbs. (i.e. animals, feed, cages, etc.); stand, bend, lift and pursue stray animals; carry, lift pull/push 30 lbs. of supplies; stoop, squat, kneel, climb and stretch to reach areas of the work-site for routine cleaning. Knowledge and skills to operate animal euthanizing chamber and maintain carbon monoxide gas cylinders. Must be reachable by telephone for emergency calls after normal operating hours.
